Mary Schruba

Sherley Hall

Years as an RA: 3

Why do you love your position?

As an RA, you get to meet many different people.  You are able to help them find the joys of college life, walk through the day to day hardships and help develop their strengths.  It is a job where one has so many chances to make an impact on people's lives and show residents that they are cared for.

What valuable skills have you gained?

Academically, the RA position has taught me how to organize and plan. The job has given me valuable leadership experiences and helped me mature.  I have also learned ways to be a better listener and how to make others know that they are cared for.

If you could give an applicant any piece of advice going into the process, what would it be?

Make sure to turn the paper work on time. Realize that you will not know how to be an RA until you are in training so don't sweat the fact that you might not know everything about the job.

James R. McCombs

Clark Hall

Years as an RA: 1.5 years

Why do you love your position?

One word, Residents, no other job on campus allows you a greater opportunity to invest in the lives of students as does the RA position.

What valuable skills have you gained?

I have gained conflict resolution which allows me to deal with everyday problems outside of my job.  I have also learned how to create a conversation out of nothing and how to transform that into a foundation for a relationship and connection to that person.  I have also learned crucial time management skills which allow me the ability to handle many different projects at one time without spreading myself too thin and with my business degree, that is highly valuable.

If you could give an applicant any piece of advice going into the process, what would it be?

If you are applying to this position for the wrong reasons, it will show up in the first semester as an RA so be sure you know what you want and why you want it. Never, ever limit yourself to your potential.
