Name: Jewels Howard

Number of Years on Staff: 1 year

Current Residence Hall: Samuelson/Carter Hall

Other involvement on campus: ADPi, NRHH, I am the Vice President of the TCU Deutschklub, and I have other on campus jobs

Why did you decided to apply for the RA position?:

Even though I felt like I was connected on campus I really wanted to be an R.A.  My R.A. freshman year was someone I knew was there for me if I needed her, helped me meet the people living around me, and she also kept me up to date on all the awesome things going on around campus, and I saw the position as something that I could do well with and help make an impact on residence lives.

What do you like most about the RA position?:

Now that I am an R.A. I love it!  I am the R.A. for the Language and International LLC and it gives me such joy to help broaden people’s ideas about different cultures, not to mention the fact that I am learning about all the different places my residents are from.  Many of my residents are a part, if not leaders, of different cultural groups on campus, and so it is fun to work with them on creating some really interesting programs.

What skills have you developed as a result of the RA position?:

By being an R.A. I have developed some of my skills.  I have been pretty good at talking to people one-on-one when they are having a problem with someone else, but by being an R.A. I have learned how to take that skill and use it to become a mediator between roommates if they are having issues. This is a skill that I feel could probably benefit most everyone no matter what career they go into after college.  I have also become much better at time management!  This is something that is very important to me because I am involved in other organizations, take a full course load, and have the R.A. position.  The position also helps you with finding ways to connect to people that maybe if you had not become their R.A. would have never even met and I thinks it's so cool when that happens!

What advice would you give to students interested in apply for the RA position?: The advise that I would give to someone interested in applying is to first of all make sure that you have time for it!  As I have stated before time management is very important.  There are many things that R.A.s do that are behind the scenes and I know that as a student I had no idea what all my freshman R.A. was doing to help make our community.  It is also important so you will a) do well in everything that you do and b) not become burned out.  Time is the major thing, but they might want to think about talking to their R.A. or any R.A. in general more about their personal experience, because although we all have the same job title the job R.A.s do can vary depending on what hall they are in and if it is one is working with freshman or upper classmen.
