Residential Services FAQ



In the many years we have provided a home base for students at TCU, we have noticed that many students pose the same questions when they call, e-mail, or write our office. Check out the questions and answers below to see if you may have wanted to ask the same question.  If you have a question that is not covered in this FAQ, please submit it and we will answer your question privately via our Ask a Question page.

 

 

Q: When will I find out my room and roommate assignment?

A: You should receive your room and roommate assignment in mid to late July via the TCU portal.  To check your assignment log on to my.tcu.edu.

 

Q: How is my roommate assigned?
A: Roommate assignments are based upon the information students supply via our on-line housing FrogLife Living Preferences Survey.

 

Q: May I get a room by myself?
A: All first semester freshmen are required to have roommates. Priority for single rooms will be given to requests of upper-level students as space allows.

 

Q: How do I meet new friends at TCU?
A: Through campus organizations, residence hall programs, and social wing activities.

 

Q: Can my friends of the opposite gender visit me in my residence hall?

A: Yes, you may have visitors of the opposite gender in your residence hall room from 12 noon to 12 midnight Sunday through Thursday, and 12 noon to 2:00 a.m. Friday and Saturday.  Some upper class halls have 24-hour visitation.

 

Q: May my friends stay overnight?
A: Yes, occasional overnight guests of the same gender are allowed in your room if they do not create an inconvenience for your roommate or other residents.

 

Q: Do you have Coed residence halls?
A: Yes, TCU has Coed residence halls.
  

Q: Are pets permitted in the residence halls?
A: Yes, but only if your pet happens to be a fish. No other pets are allowed in the residence halls.

 

 

Q: What kind of stuff should I bring with me?
A: There are a variety of things you might want to bring with you when you move in to the residence hall.

 

Q: Is my room furnished?
A: When you arrive on campus you will find that your room is furnished with basic furniture - beds, dressers, desks, and chairs for every resident in the room.

 

Q: Am I allowed to decorate my room in the residence hall?
A: Yes, it is important that your room be the kind of room in which you and your roommate feel comfortable. The way in which you decorate should reflect your personalities and living needs. There are, however, a few guidelines that you will want to keep in mind as you begin to decorate your room.

 

Q: Are microwaves permitted in the residence halls?
A: No, microwave ovens are not permitted in residence halls unless they are a microwave/refrigerator/freezer unit provided by the MicroFridge® Company. There is one MicroFridge in every room.
 

Q: Should I bring my computer?
A: Yes, both Apple Macintosh computers and IBM-compatible computers can utilize the TCU campus network. 

 

Q: What kind of telephone services do you offer?
A: TCU has engaged TCU Connect to provide state of the art telephone and cable services to every resident.

 

Q: Can I choose my own long distance service?
A:  Yes, alternative carriers may be accessed on a 0+ basis. 

 

Q: Will I have access to cable television?
A: Yes, cable television service, featuring a broad array of educational and entertainment programming including a TCU movie channel, will be active in your room upon arrival.

 

Q: Are lofts permitted in residence hall rooms?
A: Yes, students may check out loft kits from their hall staff in Colby, Brachman, Wiggins, Foster, Waits and the sorority and fraternity halls or develop their own lofts provided they are within certain limitations. 

 

Q: If I bring some of my own furniture, will TCU remove and store their furniture?

A: No.  All TCU furniture must remain in your room and be in your room at check-out.

Q: Are residence halls open during holiday breaks?
A: Academic Year housing is available in all residence halls except fraternity and sorority halls.  You will move in to your room in August and move out in May.  Staff will be on duty throughout the entire academic year so there is no need to leave during breaks including Christmas Break! Q: Will I have access to a kitchen in the residence halls?
A: Some residence halls are equipped with a kitchen. The four commons halls do not have kitchens.

Q:  What if I change my mind about attending TCU?  What's the cancellation policy for housing?
A: The Advance Housing Payment is fully refundable until May 15, for incoming students, and partially refundable until July 15.  Housing cancellations may be faxed to Housing and Residence Life at 817/257-7862, via our Ask a Question page or mailed to:

Continuing students should check cancellation dates/refunds.  

 

Q: What if I run out of money on my dining plan?
A: Money may be added to your meal plan by simply going to the ID Center, in Brown Lupton Univesity Union, and the added amount will be charged to your TCU student account.  

  

Q: What if my property gets damaged? 
A: TCU is not responsible for damaged property and students are encouraged to carry their own renters insurance.
